To give some context I should mention I feel like I lived this case, residing in the Duke community, and attending many a soul-searching event that spring. Example- I was one of three whites in a crowded church auditorium when the New Black Panthers spoke to the crowd, and threatened revenge. When I refer to this entire event, I call it "The Year That Durham Went Mad."Cohen's work is likely to live on as the most definitive account we'll ever have of an absolutely confounding, complex, painful, and revealing sea of events. Because it wasn't just one event, but a miserable string of them, each offering both ambiguity, and anguish.If the closest we've come in two centuries to repeating a Salem Witch-hunt event interests you, read this book. I kept waiting for Cohen to reveal his biases, it says something that I could never really detect any. Just exhaustive journalism. And exhausting, a long read.Don't be lead astray by the critical reviews, I doubt most of those folks even read the book. At least not carefully. They certainly weren't there, like I was, the year that a major university town went absolutely bonkers.
