Tiffany Reisz bowls me over with every freaking book of hers. I’m sad that I only have two full-length books left in this series because each one has been a master class. I love that she takes chances with her writing and plays around with structure and theme.This time around we are fully immersed in Kingsley’s perspective, that rapscallion of a man. While there’s a lot to love about Søren, to me he so fully belongs to Nora that he doesn’t feel attainable. Kingsley, on the other hand, just makes you fall in love with him right on the page. Were he to appear in front of me, I wouldn’t deny him anything. That is the power of his charm.This is the story of how Kingsley built his BDSM club Eighth Circle. It’s the story of how Søren came back into his life and when he first met Nora. It’s about how Søren saved him from his self-destructive purposes and gave him purpose again and it was magnificent. I adored the side characters, particularly Sam, whose storyline went in unexpected directions.Reisz plays with our perceptions and expectations. Nothing and no one is as they seem. Kingsley has always pushed the envelope and especially does so here. The King is framed in the present by having Kingsley visit Grace (and the baby) and telling her the story of what all happened 20 years prior. It was mesmerizing and enthralling. But the brief glimpses we get of the present day storyline are no less insightful. The baby, after all, has changed things for this group and it was really moving to see all the ways how.I’m not sure about representation/some of the language used for Sam’s character as a butch lesbian. It’s set in the mid-90s and so it does seem to fit the time period but it also felt jarring at times since the words and our understanding has evolved so much since then and even more so since the book came out in 2014. There’s also an instance of misgendering when Sam discusses an ex who is a trans man. Just noting this for anyone who needs it.CW: miscarriage joke, suicidal ideation, casual drug use, rape fantasy, past rape while in prison, references to past torture and imprisonment, scars from past shooting, homophobia, misgendering, anti-abortion rhetoric and abortion clinic protest scene, past conversion therapy, shock therapy, burn marks, spiritual abuse, past sexual predation by a youth group leader/church pastor, casual drug use, past child sexual abuse, past incest, infidelity
